Parenting Is Tough

Parenthood….It’s like looking both ways before you cross the street, only to get hit by an airplane. Parenting is the most stressful and most difficult thing you will ever do IF you are doing it right. Let’s face it, there are no perfect parents. We are all dysfunctional at best and while we try our best every day, we fall short at times…way short of what Christ intended us to be as parents.

Psalms 127:3 reminds us that “children are a gift of God…” You see, God loves children and God loves families. In fact, he specifically designed the family to bring Him worship and honor. Unfortunately the family unit that God specifically designed to bring him glory has become diluted as a result of sin (Romans 5:12). If our children were perfect, we would have no trouble being perfect parents. Unfortunately there is no such thing as perfection outside of Christ. Our children are born sinners just like we were. They have sin nature just like us. We don’t have to teach our children to throw a tantrum or lie. Why? Because we’re all born sinners and yearn to satisfy our own selfish desires.

While it’s our duty as parents to constantly teach our children everything from potty training to tee-ball, we must not forsake our most important responsibility as parents… to teach and train our children in the ways of the Lord (Proverbs 22:6). That same verse also holds one of the most wonderful promises of the Bible as the later part of the passage reads “when they are old, they will not depart from it.” So the next time you have one of those “days” just remember we’re not commanded to be perfect parents. We’re not commanded to know everything there is to know about parenting. We are simply commanded to love our children and train our children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4). So if you feel overwhelmed, stressed, or even burnt out, raise your coffee cup and drink to the fact that you are not alone… You (and a whole lot of Jesus) got this!

Praying for you always,
