This week, our VBS director, Sara Wade, shares her heart about VBS. You can see details and pre-register your child on our VBS page and join us June 25-29th at Ridgeview.
Well, It’s VBS Time Again!
Growing up, I went to Vacation Bible School every summer, sometimes at multiple places. I have several good memories from those summers: singing “The B-I-B-L-E” and “This Little Light of Mine” with other kids my age, squirming through the Bible lesson taught on felt panels, or looking forward to the snack of sandwich cookies and Kool-Aid in the church basement. VBS has evolved quite a bit since I was a kid, from the music to the snacks. The purpose has never changed, though. It is still our goal at Ridgeview to share the love of Jesus with our community through this exciting week for kids.
Directing a VBS can be a daunting task. There’s a lot of stuff to organize and a whole lot of little eyes watching. I was asked to take over Ridgeview’s VBS in 2016 when our fearless leader of ten plus years decided to retire. Before that, I had been content to be the crazy lady who taught the hand motions and dance moves to partially-enthusiastic elementary schoolers. Overseeing the whole shebang was a job that certainly fell outside my comfort zone. But that is how God works sometimes—He takes you out of your comfort zone to help you discover how His plans for you are so much greater than what you thought you wanted. One of my favorite verses has always been Jeremiah 29:11. “’For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord. ‘Plans to prosper and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” I trusted His promise and agreed to give it my best.
What I didn’t realize at the time was how rewarding working with all the wonderful volunteers and kids would be. It is truly a blessing to spend time with people who share a heart to help the kids in our community learn more about the Lord. VBS can be a wonderful time for the church family to come together and accomplish something fantastic. In the past 24 years that I have belonged to Ridgeview, our church family has shown again and again what a joy it is working together for ministry. I truly love my church. It’s a family, not just a place.
In a couple of weeks, Ridgeview will have VBS once again. Our dates this year are Sunday, June 25, through Thursday, June 29, with family night on Friday the 30th. You are welcome to come be a part of our family. You can come work (we still need volunteers) or be a part of the Adult Bible study at 7pm. Or you can just come hang out. Some of the best fellowship times for my family have been chilling out on the playground after a long but rewarding night of VBS. I truly look forward to what the Lord will do this year. If you, like myself and our fantastic volunteers, have a heart to share the love of Jesus with kids in our community, then I look forward to seeing you there, too.
