Earlier this week I woke up to find my beautiful wife asleep on our bathroom floor. After checking to see if she was still alive, I heard her whisper the two words no father ever wants to hear…“I’m sick.” Upon hearing those words, my mind shifted immediately to my 3 small ninja-monkeys that would soon be waking up. Being the strong, courageous husband that I am, I made sure Renea was comfortable and as I tucked her back into bed, I whispered “I got this” and encouraged her to get some rest. I’m pretty sure the Lord laughed out loud the second He heard me say those words and He made it very clear that morning that I got nothing!
As fate would have it, all 3 of the boys woke up at the EXACT same time and as soon as their feet hit the floor it was game on. After throwing clothes on everyone and getting everyone fed, we were able to get Dawson to school alive and on time (I think). On our way back home, I began to think about the day ahead and what activities me and the twins could do together to make our day as structured as possible. I mean really, how hard could it be to entertain a couple of 2 year old boys for one day? Let’s just say Proverbs 16:18 is for real folks. Seriously men, look it up and memorize that verse!
From tent building, super heroes, and dance parties, to time-outs, clean up’s and temper-tantrums, we had an interesting day. Did I mention clean ups? While it was definitely crazy at times, I’m happy to report that we all made it! I had my doubts at times but we made it an entire day without any injuries (any major injuries that is). As bed time approached and the boys drifted off to sleep, I was able to finally catch my breath and reflect upon my day. As the screams and laughs of the day gave way to silence, I began to realize just how many lessons the Lord had taught me throughout my crazy day.
Take for instance the messes the boys made throughout the day….All 180 of them. It is amazing how fast twin boys can turn a clean house into what looks like a disaster area! Are we any different in our own lives? If you’re anything like me, it doesn’t take us long at all to make a mess of things without the help and guidance of the Holy Spirit. That’s why it’s so important to walk daily with the Lord and allow the Holy Spirit to lead and direct our paths because if left up to us, things will get very messy. Another interesting lesson I was able to learn was the beauty of genuine child-like faith. I bet the boys spent at least a couple hours jumping off the couch into my arms with absolutely no fear. They had total confidence in dad catching them and taking care of them. When is the last time we trusted our heavenly Father with that kind of faith? Our heavenly Father is longing for us to jump into His arms of grace and love with the upmost confidence that He will not only catch us, but will uphold us (Isaiah 41:10). Oh that the Lord would increase our faith!
Music was another valuable lesson of the day. For those of you who have been around my boys, especially Andrew, you know that they absolutely love to dance. If a song has any beat to it at all, you’ll more than likely see at least a couple Jessee boys breaking it down. Several times throughout the day we would find ourselves with the stereo cranked up just jamming out and having a good time. When is the last time you turned up the music in your life and just enjoyed the moment? In James chapter 4 we find that our lives are like a vapor, only here for a short time and then gone. Listen, life is too short to be miserable all the time. Enjoy every minute God has given you and turn up the music! Quiet time was another valuable lesson I learned. It is easy to get so consumed with the craziness of life that we forget to spend quiet time with our heavenly Father. Throughout the day, I was in total survival mode moving from one thing to another and had no time to even think about life lessons or what God was trying to teach me. If I had not taken time at the end of the day to reflect upon Him, I would have never been able to see all the things He had to teach me. Life is crazy, I know! But you need to understand life without God in it is even crazier! I encourage you to spend time with the Lord daily. He has so many lessons to teach us each and every day so don’t be so consumed with this life that you miss out on all His many blessings.
Lastly, I want to give a huge shout out to all the moms and single parents out there. You guys are the real super hero’s! I know it gets hard at times and you feel exhausted and overwhelmed but know that it’s not in vain. You may not see it now but through your love, patience, and grace, your children are learning through you how to love like Jesus.
Praying for you all,
Dustin
